Resilience Science for Transformation

This stream explores social-ecological transformations for human wellbeing and sustainability in tune with the biosphere

Creating a fair, prosperous world that maintains and strengthens Earth’s life-support system requires transformative changes. This stream aims to use and develop resilience thinking to understand and enhance social-ecological innovations and transformations towards sustainability. Our research is organized around three different approaches to transformations: (1) pathways and phases; (2) innovation and scaling; and (3) agency and capacities.

Important research questions and objectives include:

- How and under which conditions can new ideas, experiments and initiatives lead to large-scale, systemic transformations towards sustainability?

- What could ‘good’ Anthropocenes look like, and who decides? How can potential “Seeds of a Good Anthropocene” (e.g. initiatives, technologies or social innovations) be identified and be combined to facilitate transformations towards sustainable futures?

- How do we build capacities to envision alternative futures, and how can the potential of those visions be assessed for whether they will contribute to transformations that are just, prosperous, and sustainable?

- How can we effectively link transformation theory and practice to mutually inform one another?

- What roles do system entrepreneurs, opportunity contexts, and transformative capacities play in transformations? How do context and agency interact within transformations?
